Come! Ms. Dunlap will give two talks at the CNPS Conservation Conference Feb. 1-3 in LA!

One regarding a database of 3,700 nectar plants (& how to collect images to benefit pollinators), and the other regarding
a prototypical key incorporating a novel plant identification system that produced an order of magnitude improvement.

Danaus plexippus, Monarch
The classic, beloved migrating butterfly.

Listed here is our current, complete list of nectar plants that appeal to the Monarch. It contains 95 entries including 44 species and 51 additional genera. We offer the master list here to help you navigate to specific plants rather than pawing through all our cultivars. Most of these genera contain native plants that can be grown in the Monarch's range.

fyi, it is shown here on the yellow-flowering Roldana petasitis. It nectared on this plant for 34 minutes. Didn't budge its legs – simply moved its proboscis from one nectar pool to another on the plant’s branching inflorescence. The other image is a close-up of a Zinnia blossom, as viewed by a butterfly.

Speaking of weeds, do avoid these invasives: Lantana camara, Echium plantagineum and Echium pininaba, Osteospermum ecklonis, Scabiosa atropurpurea, 3 Senecios (S. inaequidens, linearifolius, and quadridentatus), and Trifolium angustifolium.
