Come! Ms. Dunlap will give two talks at the CNPS Conservation Conference Feb. 1-3 in LA!

One regarding a database of 3,700 nectar plants (& how to collect images to benefit pollinators), and the other regarding
a prototypical key incorporating a novel plant identification system that produced an order of magnitude improvement.

Agraulis vanillae, Gulf Fritillary, is a gorgeous butterfly with orange with black markings. It is a bit smaller than a Monarch and flies during summer and fall. It is totally dependent on garden plants for survival, so cultivating plants favored by the Gulf Fritillary supports this creature.

It uses Passiflora as a host plant for depositing eggs. I have found it favors red-flowering, Passiflora vitifolia, both as a source of adult nectar and for depositing eggs. Passiflora vitifolia is a vine that may die back in Zone 9 during a cold winter, but recovers and grows back in late spring. The adult Gulf Fritillary nectar on the blossoms of this Passiflora. A second red-flowering vine, Passiflora manicata, is also sold in the marketplace, and will likely attract the adults to feed and deposit eggs as well. Both of these vines require twining support, such as a trellis or arbor. Passiflora vitifolia grows to 16' long, while P. manicata grows to 10' long.
