The Zebra Longwing is a distinctive black and white stripped butterfly with especially elongated 3-4-inch-wide wings. It resides in both Florida and parts of Texas and is the state butterfly of Florida. It is cold tender so will not go much further north, however, it was recently sighted in Carteret County along the coast of North Carolina, a locale about 140 miles north of other sightings. It was found nectaring on Solidago. Solidago canadensis grows in Carteret County and is similar to the plant recorded with the Zebra Longwing. The US Forest service has good information about this butterfly.

Passiflora is the host plant for the Zebra Longwing. According to the Natural History Museum it uses Passiflora in general but within the genus is known to use P. affinis, lutea, and suberosa as host plants. If you reside in the vicinity of the Zebra Longwing, you could cultivate each one of these Passiflora to determine its local favorite.

The adults will nectar on:
Ageratina jucunda
Bidens pilosa
Buddleja
Buddleja × weyeriana 'Honeycomb'
Euphorbia pulcherrima
Helianthus
Hibiscus
Jatropha multifida
Lantana
Malvaviscus arboreus
